Meet Dr. Nicole (Nikki) Sinkner, ND

Hi, I’m Dr. Nikki, a naturopathic doctor at Natural Choice Medical Clinic in Guelph.

I work with women who want to better understand their health, address the underlying factors contributing to their symptoms and make sustainable changes that help them feel their best.

My practice has a particular interest in women’s health, hormones, preconception care, fertility and pregnancy. I also support patients with concerns such as irregular or painful menstrual cycles, PCOS/PMOS, endometriosis, perimenopause/menopause, thyroid and metabolic health, digestion concerns, stress management, and overall health optimization.

Whether you are trying to understand changes in your menstrual cycle, preparing for pregnancy, going through fertility treatment or simply feeling that something in your health is not quite right, my goal is to help you understand what is happening and create a plan that is specific to you.

Looking beyond the symptoms

I think of my work as being a little like being a detective.

When you come in with a symptom, I don’t want to simply put a temporary bandage over it. I want to understand the bigger picture and investigate what may be contributing to what you are experiencing.

Your initial assessment includes a detailed review of your health history, symptoms, menstrual cycles, nutrition, sleep, stress, digestion, lifestyle, medications and supplements. When appropriate, I use comprehensive bloodwork to help us investigate areas such as nutrient status, hormones, thyroid function, inflammation, blood sugar and metabolic health.

From there, we can identify what needs attention and decide where to start together.

I place a strong emphasis on nutrition and lifestyle because I believe these foundations are an important part of long-term health. Depending on your individual needs, your plan may also include evidence-based supplements, botanical medicine, injections or acupuncture.

Everything is individualized. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol, and I take the time to explain why I am recommending something and how it fits into your life.

My areas of practice

I commonly support patients with:

  • Women’s hormonal health
  • Preconception and fertility
  • Pregnancy nutrition and wellness
  • Postpartum health and recovery
  • Fertility treatment support, including IVF and IUI
  • PCOS/PMOS
  • Endometriosis
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Painful or heavy periods
  • PMS/PMDD
  • Thyroid concerns
  • Blood sugar and metabolic health
  • Perimenopause and menopause
  • Hormone-related acne and hair changes
  • Sleep concerns
  • Digestive concerns
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Stress and lifestyle-related health concerns
  • Overall health and wellness

You do not need to have a specific diagnosis before coming in. Sometimes the first step is simply taking the time to understand your symptoms, review your health history and determine what deserves further investigation.

Preconception and fertility support

Preparing for pregnancy is about more than simply taking a prenatal vitamin.

I work with patients who are preparing to conceive naturally as well as those who are undergoing fertility investigations or treatment. My previous clinical externship at Conceive Health, a naturopathic fertility clinic affiliated with Trio Fertility, gave me experience supporting patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including IVF and IUI.

During my externship, I worked alongside fertility doctors and supported patients with nutrition, lifestyle, acupuncture and individualized supplementation.

Recommendations were based on each patient’s symptoms, detailed health history, menstrual-cycle patterns and bloodwork.

This experience helped shape the way I practise today. I value the opportunity to bring together naturopathic and conventional approaches so that patients can receive complementary support while working with their fertility team.

If you are preparing for pregnancy or any form of ART, we can work together to identify areas of your health that may benefit from attention and create a plan that fits alongside your conventional care.

Supporting hormones and menstrual health

Your menstrual cycle can provide valuable information about your overall health.

Irregular, painful or heavy periods, PMS, PCOS, endometriosis and other hormonal concerns can have many contributing factors. Rather than looking at one hormone or symptom in isolation, I consider the broader picture.

Depending on your individual situation, this may include looking at nutrition and nutrient status, thyroid function, blood sugar and metabolic health, stress, sleep, digestion, lifestyle and hormone patterns.

The goal is to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and determine which areas are most important to address first.

For some patients, this may involve dietary and lifestyle changes. For others, evidence-based supplementation, botanical medicine, acupuncture or other treatments within my scope of practice may be appropriate.

I also have prescribing privileges and may prescribe bioidentical hormone therapy (HRT) when appropriate.

Acupuncture and fertility support

Acupuncture can be a useful part of an individualized fertility and women’s health plan.

In fertility care, I use acupuncture with the goal of supporting blood flow to the reproductive organs and promoting overall reproductive health. It can also be incorporated into care plans for hormone balance, menstrual-cycle regularity and menstrual pain.

Outside of fertility care, acupuncture may also be helpful as part of a broader plan addressing stress and energy.

As with everything I recommend, I consider whether acupuncture makes sense for you rather than automatically including it in every treatment plan.

Pregnancy and postpartum care

Once we begin working together, I can support you throughout pregnancy and into the postpartum period and beyond.

Pregnancy is a time of significant physical and emotional change, and your nutritional and health needs continue to evolve throughout each stage.

During pregnancy, my care may focus on nutrition, nutrient needs, digestion, energy, stress and lifestyle, while working alongside your midwife, family physician, obstetrician or other maternity-care providers.

I also believe postpartum health deserves just as much attention as pregnancy.

After having a baby, it can be easy to put your own health at the bottom of the list. My approach to postpartum care is to look at the health of the whole person—not just whether you are managing to get through the day.

Depending on your needs, we may look at:

  • Iron and other nutrient levels through appropriate bloodwork
  • Nutrition and nourishment
  • Energy and fatigue
  • Hormonal and thyroid health
  • Digestion
  • Sleep
  • Stress and emotional wellbeing
  • Lifestyle and realistic self-care
  • Nutritional needs while breastfeeding

My goal is to help you feel supported during this transition and make sure your own health does not get lost in the process of caring for your new baby.

My approach to naturopathic care

I want you to leave your appointments feeling heard, understood and empowered—not overwhelmed by a long list of things you are supposed to do.

We have time to look at the different aspects of your health and understand how they may be connected. I explain the reasoning behind my recommendations so that you understand what we are doing and why.

Most importantly, your plan needs to work for your actual life.

I don’t believe in giving everyone the same diet, supplement protocol or treatment plan. What works for one person may not be appropriate for another. Your health history, symptoms, bloodwork, goals, preferences and lifestyle all matter.

Together, we prioritize the areas that need attention and make changes that are realistic and sustainable.

When appropriate, I also work collaboratively with family doctors, nurse practitioners, midwives, OB/GYNs and fertility clinics. I believe patients benefit when their healthcare providers communicate and each practitioner contributes within their area of expertise.

Education and professional training

I graduated from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) and hold a prescribing licence as a naturopathic doctor.

My clinical training at Conceive Health provided additional experience in naturopathic fertility care and supporting patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF and IUI. Working alongside fertility doctors gave me valuable insight into how naturopathic and conventional medicine can work together to provide patients with comprehensive care.

I continue to build my knowledge in women’s health, hormones, fertility, preconception, pregnancy and postpartum care so that I can provide patients with thoughtful, evidence-informed recommendations.

Naturopathic care in Guelph and across Ontario

I practise at Natural Choice Medical Clinic in Guelph and see patients both in person and virtually throughout Ontario.

Whether you are looking to optimize your overall health, understand your hormones, improve your menstrual cycle, prepare for pregnancy, support a healthy pregnancy or just simply optimize your overall health, we can start by looking at the bigger picture.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before your first appointment. We can begin with where you are now, investigate what may need attention and build your plan from there.
